Buckler
These wooden bucklers are made from 9mm plywood, covered in canvas, with an Ash handle, steel boss (made to withstand re-enactment and buhurt) and a sewn leather rim. They come in at approximately 30cm wide (which fits within Wessex regulations), with the handle side having an opening of 14cm and are on the whole lighter and more maneuverable than their all steel counterparts!
Why use a wooden buckler? They are lighter, quieter, transfer less ‘stick shock’ on impact, and have a lower continued maintenance needed for repeated use. No filing needed.
From experience you can definitely fit most single-handed gloves and Sparring Gloves in the boss. I have got my personal Xiphosura (Kvetun) in as well, however it is a tight fit on the back of the glove, but I felt no pressure on my hand. A member of my Hema club has also managed to get their Thokks in as well. Ideally you would want to have a bit of space within the boss, to allow the buckler to rotate on it’s handle, this will give you a better range of motion when practising I.33 or Lignitzer’s Sword and Buckler.
